The main responsibility of this position is to design experiments as well as develop material and equipment specifications to achieve CSP (Cost, Schedule and Performance) as per standards, branding objectives and project plan. The incumbent will conduct research, evaluate findings, provide technical input, lead design experiments and develop material / equipment trails intended to test packaging for suitability and performance under various conditions.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Work with development and operations teams to coordinate and run material/equipment trials in order to test packaging for suitability and performance under various conditions.
Lead design of experiments to evaluate various packages/materials/equipment, interpret test data, and report results for each validation/verification as well as to improve equipment operations.
Develop material/equipment specifications including the use of lab testing equipment to validate and confirm results.
Research & acquire production material and equipment related to packaging configurations.
Coordinate documentation of work instructions for new packaging configurations.
Provide technical engineering support for packaging activities.
Interact with personnel across all levels of the company while building strong relationships and managing customers, internal/external, suppliers.
Perform root cause analysis and provide solutions / recommendations.
Identify, assess, prioritize and recommend energy-saving opportunity projects including both capital improvement projects as well as operational and maintenance changes.
Evaluate and provide technical input and solutions for new package formats.
Commercialize product improvement and cost reduction opportunities related to packaging operations.
Lead multiple and complex projects in a fast paced and aggressive environment.
Develop and monitor Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to measure energy performance and apply accountability.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Packaging Engineering Diploma or Degree in a relevant engineering discipline combined with a minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of packaging engineering experience with the Pharmaceutical industry. Candidates possessing Master level degrees are preferred.
At least five (5) years of experience within a manufacturing environment.
Experience with statistical process control, thermoformed plastics, extruded polymer films, corrugated, folding cartons and labels.
Proven experience working in optimizing efficiency in the area of utilities and maintenance.
Excellent understanding of packaging equipment drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
Technical analysis with knowledge of TOPS or CAPE, Solidworks (or other 3D modeling for 3D printing), and AutoCAD an asset.
Excellent leadership, planning, management, interpersonal and presentation skills.
Exceptional process and project management skills, with high attention to detail and ability to work well under pressure.
Ability to communicate and work effectively in a team-based environment combined with good written and oral communication skills.
Possess true sense of ownership and pride in work with a hands on, can-do attitude.
Strong organizational and multi-tasking ability in order to accommodate changes in priorities.
Ability to support a 3 shift 24/7 production operation on an as required basis is critical.
